Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The ex-president was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in September and sentenced more than a 27-year term in jail, but he remained under confinement pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a preventative measure after recent developments came to light.

This included attempting to break his ankle monitor and a call for a demonstration that could enable a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the detention, the magistrate said intelligence from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the surveillance device to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the protest called by his child.

His child, his son Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or see it all from your phone there on your couch? I urge you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the chance of his transfer to foreign missions near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a record of arranging to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.

The legal document underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, Brazil's capital, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.

Worldwide Consequences

His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative US President Donald Trump, causing him to implement a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.

He is being detained in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will undergo a detention review on the following day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the Top Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.

They also requested that Bolsonaro be permitted to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he needed ongoing care for lung conditions and other health problems.

Background on Conviction

The former president was found guilty of heading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the national vote to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a plan which included plans to assassinate the current president and his running partner, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The scheme was prevented because it failed to get the support of the military leaders. His successor was sworn in without problem on the first day of 2023.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, numerous Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised official structures in the national capital, Brasília.

The law enforcement took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.

The justices found that the rioters had been incited by him whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, restore order and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also barred from seeking elected position until 2060 - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The former president called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him participating in the next presidential race.
