The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.
