The US central bank reduced borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Move Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Changes
In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.
The figure of positions created to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline
Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication once the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for September that showed that costs are rising, albeit slowly. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
