Lando Norris just pipped team-mate and title rival the Australian for the top spot in the final moments of practice at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. Norris, who took the championship lead from his teammate by just one point after winning in the Mexican Grand Prix recently, beat the Melbourne-born driver by a tiny margin of 0.023secs. Before then, Piastri had been the quickest of the McLaren pair throughout the hour before the sprint shootout scheduled for 6:30 PM GMT. Max Verstappen, the sole remaining contender in the championship fight, lying with a 36-point deficit Norris, ended up in 17th place as his Red Bull team opted for a unique setup. His teammate Yuki Tsunoda was the only driver to go off, though minor, when he lost control at Turn Four early in the session. The Japanese spun out over the track edges before sliding over the gravel trap, and was blessed to get away with just a light touch of the barrier. The Ferrari of the seven-time champion also spun, at the very end of the practice, rotating twice through the high-speed Mergulho turn before the final corner on to the pit straight. The seven-time champion finished practice in 19th, one place behind teammate the Monegasque driver. The McLaren pair were significantly quicker of the remaining drivers, with Nico Hulkenberg's Sauber in third, over half a second slower than Piastri's pace. The Aston Martin of Fernando Alonso was fourth quickest, with the Sauber of Bortoleto ahead of the Mercedes of George Russell and the Alpine of Gasly and the Williams of Carlos Sainz.
